Block Editor tips

6th April 2021 by Glasgowapuu

After the event…

Well the talk is over and several attendees asked about the links I showed in my presentation. The WP Block Editor is now an established part of the WordPress package. It is improving all the time and there is still plenty of online discussion as to the merits of the Block Editor in comparison to the Classic Editor and the Page Builder offerings such as Elementor, Divi and Beaver Builder.

Discussions about how — and why! — to use the Block Editor can be found here…

  • wordpress.org
  • wpbeginner.com
  • wpbuffs.com
  • https://wphive.com/reviews/best-gutenberg-blocks-plugins-for-wordpress/

Make sure you check out the dates of some these discussion groups. Some have not aged well!

In addition, I identified some practice tools that allow you to get used to the Block Editor without anyone looking over your shoulder. MAMP, WAMP and XAMP are well known in this area but I find that Local is easier to implement and Frontenberg is a useful tool for trying things out too.

Useful Accessibility Tools

18th June 2021 by Glasgowapuu

Graham Armfield

When you are building a site there are lots (and lots) of things you have to consider. One area that often gets left behind is that of accessibility. In which case, how useful would be to have some useful accessibility tools at your disposal?

Join us online on Wednesday 7 June (18:30) for our next WP Glasgow MeetUp.

Sign up for the MeetUp

Graham Armfield is an acknowledged authority on making websites accessibility to everyone.
So we are fortunate to have him available to us as a speaker for this MeetUp.

Graham will be identifying some of the useful accessibility tools available to you which will help you make your site accessible to all. Some of these are plug-ins but a lot of these are behaviours and processes that you can adopt to increase your audience size, simply by making it easier to read and navigate.
Join us for an online, Zoom-based MeetUp.

Core Web Vitals

4th May 2021 by Glasgowapuu

“Core Web Vitals” are definitely going to be a ‘thing’ in 2021.
In May 2021 Google will be adding extra metrics to how it evaluates websites in the future. The last I heard was that there may be a (short) delay before it is deployed but that is no excuse for you not to have prepared for it.

You can register to attend this presentation here. Those who have registered will see the Zoom link to enable your access.

If you are interested in how you can help nudge your site up the Google rankings then this talk will be of great help to you.

An online presentation by Kayleigh Thorpe of 34SP.

Our thanks to 34SP for hosting this MeetUp.

Block Editor — hints & tips

6th April 2021 by Glasgowapuu

The next WP Glasgow MeetUp is scheduled for

6 April 2021
from 6:30pm

It’s an online meetup and the link to the Zoom call is available if you RSVP to the MeetUp at the link above.

This month’s MeetUp is a talk from Jeremy Davis on the WordPress Block Editor ⚊ known as ‘Gutenberg’ — with some hints and tips on how to use it.

Access to this talk is via the WP Glasgow MeetUp. Please register there so we know who to send the Zoom link to.

The WP Glasgow MeetUp

During the pandemic, the WP Glasgow MeetUp — like most MeetUp groups — has gone online. Over 100 individuals taking part during lockdown. A combination of talks and workshops helps spread the word on how WordPress can simplify the process of getting a website up and running.

We start gathering after 6:15pm and any talk we do will begin at 6:30. Talks are usually 30 to 40 minutes long and there is plenty of time to ask questions at the end.

WordPress powers over one-third of all the websites on the internet. It’s a free tool that allows you to create great looking websites without compromising your content. You can even change your site’s ‘look’ without having to re-do all your content again.

The WP Glasgow online MeetUps are hosted by 34SP who have provided us with the means to hold Zoom Meetups that last more than 40 minutes (!)

Starting Strong with WordPress

26th July 2020 by Glasgowapuu

Kayleigh Thorpe is Starting Strong with WordPress
© 34SP.com

This is a talk about about setting up a website. As a WordPress Specialist at 34SP, Kayleigh Thorpe has been asked ALL the questions about starting a WordPress website… even some sensible ones!! If you follow her guidelines you are starting strong with WordPress.

In this 30-40 minute talk, Kayleigh will describe how she goes about setting up a website — the Plugins she instals first, what she looks for in a Theme, the security steps she takes first.

This could be just be the nudge you need to finally get your website up and running. See you online.

Generally we meet on the fourth Tuesday of every month. It can vary but that is what we aim for. We start gathering at 6pm and any talk we do will begin at 6:30. Talks are usually 30 to 40 minutes long and there is plenty of time to ask questions at the end.

And this month (July) it’s aimed at people who are relatively new to the WordPress experience. ‘Starting Strong with WordPress’ is intended to provide a path through the jargon and patter that inevitably accompanies such a venture.

WordPress powers over one-third of all the websites on the internet. It’s a free tool that allows you to create great looking websites without compromising your content. You can even change your site’s ‘look’ without having to re-do all your content again.

Online Workshop/HelpDesk

22nd June 2020 by Glasgowapuu

WP Glasgow MeetUp online workshop

Thank you for the positive feedback regarding our last MeetUp in May.
For that reason* we going to use the same format this month, i.e. a mutual help/workshop/Q&A type session with breakout rooms so that we can have some decent chats about WordPress and WordPress-related things. The time for your diaries is:

Tuesday 23 June 2020 at 6:30pm.

We all meet up at the start and then break up into small groups of 3 or 4 or 5 so that it doesn’t become a big bun-fight.

The Zoom code for the MeetUp is available for those who RSVP here.

This month, please let us know if you have a specific subject you’d like to talk to someone about. If there are some common themes, we’ll endeavour to put like-minded people together.
Here are some suggestions:

  • page builders (Elementor, Divi etc)
  • Gutenberg / Block Editor
  • basic suggestions for getting started — installing WP, themes, plugins
  • favourite plugins
  • WooCommerce (and alternatives?)

I’m sure you will have some other suggestions.
Please be prompt for a 6:30pm start as it will be tricky to introduce latecomers to the breakout sessions.
I’m looking forward to seeing you there.

And not because we haven’t got a speaker available. No. Not at all!
