Starting Strong with WordPress

26th July 2020 by Glasgowapuu

Kayleigh Thorpe is Starting Strong with WordPress
© 34SP.com

This is a talk about about setting up a website. As a WordPress Specialist at 34SP, Kayleigh Thorpe has been asked ALL the questions about starting a WordPress website… even some sensible ones!! If you follow her guidelines you are starting strong with WordPress.

In this 30-40 minute talk, Kayleigh will describe how she goes about setting up a website — the Plugins she instals first, what she looks for in a Theme, the security steps she takes first.

This could be just be the nudge you need to finally get your website up and running. See you online.

Access to this talk is via the WP Glasgow MeetUp. Please register there so we know who to send the Zoom link to.

The WP Glasgow MeetUp

During the pandemic, the WP Glasgow MeetUp — like most MeetUp groups — has gone online. Over 100 individuals taking part during lockdown. A combination of talks and workshops helps spread the word on how WordPress can simplify the process of getting a website up and running.

Generally we meet on the fourth Tuesday of every month. It can vary but that is what we aim for. We start gathering at 6pm and any talk we do will begin at 6:30. Talks are usually 30 to 40 minutes long and there is plenty of time to ask questions at the end.

And this month (July) it’s aimed at people who are relatively new to the WordPress experience. ‘Starting Strong with WordPress’ is intended to provide a path through the jargon and patter that inevitably accompanies such a venture.

WordPress powers over one-third of all the websites on the internet. It’s a free tool that allows you to create great looking websites without compromising your content. You can even change your site’s ‘look’ without having to re-do all your content again.

The WP Glasgow online MeetUps are hosted by 34SP who have provided us with the means to hold Zoom Meetups that last more than 40 minutes (!)

Online Workshop/HelpDesk

22nd June 2020 by Glasgowapuu

WP Glasgow MeetUp online workshop

Thank you for the positive feedback regarding our last MeetUp in May.
For that reason* we going to use the same format this month, i.e. a mutual help/workshop/Q&A type session with breakout rooms so that we can have some decent chats about WordPress and WordPress-related things. The time for your diaries is:

Tuesday 23 June 2020 at 6:30pm.

We all meet up at the start and then break up into small groups of 3 or 4 or 5 so that it doesn’t become a big bun-fight.

The Zoom code for the MeetUp is available for those who RSVP here.

This month, please let us know if you have a specific subject you’d like to talk to someone about. If there are some common themes, we’ll endeavour to put like-minded people together.
Here are some suggestions:

  • page builders (Elementor, Divi etc)
  • Gutenberg / Block Editor
  • basic suggestions for getting started — installing WP, themes, plugins
  • favourite plugins
  • WooCommerce (and alternatives?)

I’m sure you will have some other suggestions.
Please be prompt for a 6:30pm start as it will be tricky to introduce latecomers to the breakout sessions.
I’m looking forward to seeing you there.

And not because we haven’t got a speaker available. No. Not at all!

Online Workshop for WordPress

25th May 2020 by Glasgowapuu

Every three months we run the Glasgow WordPress MeetUp as a hands on workshop and helpdesk. Because we now live in ‘interesting times’, this time we shall be running an online workshop.

Not sure if it’s ever been done before but on Tuesday 26 May we will holding one of our infamous WordPress Workshops… but online!

It’s definitely a first for us so it could be quite an adventure.

Sign up to take part

You too could be part of it. Just sign up here for our online MeetUp and we will send you a link nearer the time so that you can join in.

Traditionally, our workshops involve some desks, some laptops and some brains. This will be much the same, I suppose but this time the desks, laptops and brains will be slightly further apart.

wordpress workshop

Rather than just being an overcrowded shouting match, the idea is to split off into separate breakout areas for ten minute sessions. That way you can have a sensible (?) discussion among four or five people. Let’s see how an online workshop can work.

Please bring questions, answers and a willingness to move your WordPress project to the next stage:

  • What WordPress feature has been driving you nuts?
  • Why does WordPress do that when I least expect it?
  • Does anyone know how to…?

Looking forward to seeing you there.

Background

This MeetUp will be hosted by those lovely folks at 34SP.

Last month we spoke about good plugins and site security. We’re still waiting for a link to give you background info… but it’s coming!

Thank you for your continued support. WordPress is an extraordinary project, largely propelled through volunteers and contributors like you. No matter how much, or how little, you think you know, you are a contributor to the WordPress project and everyone can bring something to it. What you are doing is unique but the chances are, there is someone out there who can help you achieve it.

WP Glasgow MeetUp online

25th April 2020 by Glasgowapuu

Yes we’re going to be online again. And keeping it simple

This time you are all invited to take a tour of Tim Nash (WordPress Platform Lead at 34SP.com)’s personal site.

Find out what Plugins he uses, his Theme, workflow. From how he publishes a post to keeping things updated and fast. Tim will spill the beans over a virtual cup of tea on all the secrets to his site.

There should be plenty of time for questions.

Come on! You’ve spent lots of time looking over the shoulders of online celebs and journos to see what their houses are like… here’s a chance to have a good ol’ nose around Tim’s website and to see how it’s put together.
The online link will be published on the day for all those who RSVP. Come and join us. This is ‘back to basics’ WordPress so there is always lots to learn.

WP Glasgow MeetUp — online

24th March 2020 by Glasgowapuu

24 March 6:30pm sharp.
WP Glasgow has its first online MeetUp and, as it’s just been pulled together at the last minute, it should be interesting! Derek York will provide an introduction to CSS — what it is and how to make use of it on your WordPress website.

It turns out that “May you live in interesting times” is not an ancient curse at all but, instead, a bit of 19th Century fiction. But hey, what are these times if not ‘interesting’? So as I am writing this, we are putting together a MeetUp, using Zoom and it might just be a little bit rough around the edges.

I guess we are all going to have to get used to more online events in the immediate future. One-to-ones are OK and so, too, are the ‘chalk and talk’ presentation type. How one chairs a virtual meeting, however, particularly one in which many people might want to speak, is a new experience for me. So you are more than welcome to join the WP Glasgow MeetUp… just don’t build up your expectations too high for tonight as I bumble around the tech. and try and ensure that everyone gets a say!

WordCamp Glasgow 2020

27th January 2020 by Glasgowapuu

Well it’s happening! WordCamp Glasgow 2020 will take place on Saturday 8 February 2020. This is the first ever Glasgow WordCamp and will be the first held anywhere in Europe in 2020.

Glasgowapuu will be at WordCamp Glasgow

What is a WordCamp?

What a good question. I’m glad you asked.
A WordCamp is a full day (or two) of all things WordPress. It takes the form of a conference, with a number of speakers through the day but with plenty of opportunities to mix and mingle with a wide variety of WordPress lovers. These may just be beginners or they may be real experts. Everybody comes to WordCamp!

WordCamp Glasgow 2020 will take place in a new venue for us:

WordCamp Glasgow 2020 will be at 103 Trongate Glasgow

Project Ability
103 Trongate
Glasgow
G1 5HD

It’s on the the third floor but is fully accessible and a spacious studio area with space for over 100 attendees. Tickets for the full day are only £20 and we would obviously love you to join us. The ticket price includes entrance to the WordCamp and access to all the talks, plus an excellent lunch, teas, coffees, a t-shirt and an invitation to join us at our after-party which will include (some) drink and more food.

So make a note in your diaries. WordCamp Glasgow 2020 is here soon and we would love you to be there.

The Glasgow WP MeetUp Team have been working hard to bring together an exceptional line-up of speakers for the WordCamp. Be inspired! Immerse yourself in WordPress for a day. You know you should be putting more time into your blog or website. Now is the time to do it. Some tickets still available. Be quick!

And of course you are welcome to attend our regular monthly MeetUps. The next one is scheduled for 24 March. Speaker yet to be announced…. I may call in a few favours at WordCamp!
