Talks

Starting Strong with WordPress

26th July 2020 by Glasgowapuu

Kayleigh Thorpe is Starting Strong with WordPress
© 34SP.com

This is a talk about about setting up a website. As a WordPress Specialist at 34SP, Kayleigh Thorpe has been asked ALL the questions about starting a WordPress website… even some sensible ones!! If you follow her guidelines you are starting strong with WordPress.

In this 30-40 minute talk, Kayleigh will describe how she goes about setting up a website — the Plugins she instals first, what she looks for in a Theme, the security steps she takes first.

This could be just be the nudge you need to finally get your website up and running. See you online.

Access to this talk is via the WP Glasgow MeetUp. Please register there so we know who to send the Zoom link to.

The WP Glasgow MeetUp

During the pandemic, the WP Glasgow MeetUp — like most MeetUp groups — has gone online. Over 100 individuals taking part during lockdown. A combination of talks and workshops helps spread the word on how WordPress can simplify the process of getting a website up and running.

Generally we meet on the fourth Tuesday of every month. It can vary but that is what we aim for. We start gathering at 6pm and any talk we do will begin at 6:30. Talks are usually 30 to 40 minutes long and there is plenty of time to ask questions at the end.

And this month (July) it’s aimed at people who are relatively new to the WordPress experience. ‘Starting Strong with WordPress’ is intended to provide a path through the jargon and patter that inevitably accompanies such a venture.

WordPress powers over one-third of all the websites on the internet. It’s a free tool that allows you to create great looking websites without compromising your content. You can even change your site’s ‘look’ without having to re-do all your content again.

WP Glasgow MeetUp — online

24th March 2020 by Glasgowapuu

24 March 6:30pm sharp.
WP Glasgow has its first online MeetUp and, as it’s just been pulled together at the last minute, it should be interesting! Derek York will provide an introduction to CSS — what it is and how to make use of it on your WordPress website.

It turns out that “May you live in interesting times” is not an ancient curse at all but, instead, a bit of 19th Century fiction. But hey, what are these times if not ‘interesting’? So as I am writing this, we are putting together a MeetUp, using Zoom and it might just be a little bit rough around the edges.

I guess we are all going to have to get used to more online events in the immediate future. One-to-ones are OK and so, too, are the ‘chalk and talk’ presentation type. How one chairs a virtual meeting, however, particularly one in which many people might want to speak, is a new experience for me. So you are more than welcome to join the WP Glasgow MeetUp… just don’t build up your expectations too high for tonight as I bumble around the tech. and try and ensure that everyone gets a say!

Elementor Pro and me

19th November 2019 by Glasgowapuu

A designer’s perspective

Next up is a WordPress Talk about the
Elementor Pro page builder
featuring Angela Wassell on
Tuesday, 26th November 2019 from 18:00 until 20:30

Scottish Youth Theatre
The Old Sheriff Court, 105 Brunswick Street,
Glasgow, G1 1TF

Elementor Pro is one of the main players in the Page Builder market. If you came to our Beaver Builder presentation back in September, here is a chance to make a comparison. If you didn’t, then it’s an opportunity to see how Elementor is being used in the real world and ask Angela Wassell some questions about it.

Angela Wassell is a freelance graphic designer who has been using Elementor professionally for a while and will talk us through her experiences with it.

Register now on the WP Glasgow MeetUp page. Nothing formal but at least it gives us an idea of how many sandwiches to order!

We look forward to seeing you here.

Best wishes from Glasgowapuu

So far, Page Builders have stayed ahead of the game in responding to the changes that WordPress has made to its main editing tool. The introduction of Gutenberg has moved WordPress in the right direction but the jury is still out in deciding whether the Page Builders will need to treat the Block Editor (Gutenberg) as direct competition.

Any software that generates its own code risks being ‘top heavy’ which might have an impact on your SEO but that may be outweighed by the simple convenience of being able to tailor your own Page and Post layouts. In the end that is a comparison only you can make for your particular circumstances. At some point you have to make your own decisions… advice like this can only help you so much and then it is down to you, your research and your decision-making. Good luck!
